Philip Graham We saw this artist perform last night, and while there we purchased two of her CDs, "Borderland" and "Dreams on Hold." Such excellent songwriting and singing! Once home, just had to download this album on Bandcamp. The music here is Eide and her piano only, which is just as effective as the folk-rock arrangements on her other two albums. Favorite track: The Gift.

A storm stalks the shore I push past our battened door I made sure to tuck them in before setting out to where we had begun The gills break my skin But it’s more then that, I feel a change within As I plunge off the wharf and I sing your name over that monstrous surf And that picture stays with me of your boat barely keeping you from that raging sea I could trumpet this fact instead I leap You were nearly wrecked my love You were nearly taken from what was a home to me How can I keep you from the sea and avert myself from smiling at irony? Your blunt nosed vessel tilts Cages vault off deck and shatter against a swell You could only grip the helm Hesitate - there is no sound There is no land I hear you roar hardily as my bowed body strains to keep you from the sea I could trumpet this fact instead I leap You were nearly wrecked my love You were nearly taken from what was a home to me How can I keep you from the sea and avert myself from smiling at irony?

Shadow 03:32
I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you Following me everywhere, seeing every little thing I do I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you You keeping me on my toes, you making me follow through Darling your inclined to be just one step behind me Never minding my pleas to turn the other way I don’t you to see the rougher parts of me I don’t want to have to worry about what’s on display I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you Following me everywhere, seeing every little thing I do I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you You keeping me on my toes, you making me follow through My tiny silhouette, you won’t let me forget the ways I affect you, you mimic my flaws Seeing the things about myself I detest is getting hard to digest and got me feeling depressed Cause, I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you You’re following me everywhere, seeing every little thing I do I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you Keeping me on my toes, you making me follow through Hey! I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you You’re following me everywhere, seeing every little thing I do I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you You’re keeping me on my toes, making me follow through I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you Following me everywhere, seeing every little thing I do I can’t shake you my shadow, no I can’t shake you Keeping me on my toes, you’re making me follow through Following me everywherem, seeing every little thing I do Keeping me on my toes, you’re making me follow through

How do I unwind? what’s been wound up so tight Over centuries and centuries Fist clenched hard, pink and white How do I unwind? I want to see myself and try to reacquaint with what’s left when I strip away the varnish and the paint I want to see myself I want to know you, and not like others do Not like looking through that twisted glass called pleasantries and politeness I just want to know you When these things come to pass all we’ll need is forgiveness I try to rewire my mind go back in time and find a piece to the puzzle a reason or a rhyme Prevent contingencies of a crime I try to rewire my mind No, a bandage will not suffice This wound will heal only when I come to realize that the outward pain is coming from the inside No, a bandage will not suffice When these things come to pass When these things come to pass all we’ll need is forgiveness

The Challenge and the Victory What’s in between is seldom seen in a hurry The Challenge and the Victory Just look to the future when the present’s blurry Deep water river runs peacefully But who knows what happens downstream It swirls down eddies, pounds on rocks cascades down waterfalls and goes through a lot Wouldn’t you say? The current, you cannot resist No matter how hard you struggle you will give into it We all are so anxious fighting our way to success We all are so anxious but without the zeal we will not make it through Deep water river runs peacefully But who knows what happens downstream It swirls down eddies, pounds on rocks cascades down waterfalls and goes through a lot Just to reach the heart of the ocean

Spending one to many days feeling high and dry Picking up the pieces gets harder each time I would be the first to say you live a privileged life But happiness is relative to the state of your mind So, how you gonna play the cards you’ve been dealt? And how you gonna sail the ship that your forefathers built? And how you gonna do the things that your able and willing? I said, how you gonna live this life that you’ve been giving? I said, how you gonna live this life that you’ve been giving? Don’t you ever tire of yourself loathing narration? You’re the only master of your fate Well, I would be the last to say you should lower your expectations But don’t you ever underestimate these words How you gonna play the cards you’ve been dealt? and how you gonna sail the ship that your forefathers built? and how you gonna do the things that your able and willing? I said, how you gonna live this life that you’ve been giving? I said, how you gonna live this life that you’ve been giving? How you gonna play the cards you’ve been dealt? and how you gonna sail the ship your forefathers built? and how you gonna do the things your able and willing? I said, how you gonna live this life that you’ve been giving? I said, how you gonna live this life that you’ve been giving? I said, how you gonna live this life that you’ve been giving?

The Gift 04:17
I watch it on a screen I see it unfolding and all at once I feel the way it changes me The sadness and the fear, these unwanted guests are here there’s nothing I can do to make them disappear But he said, “You can take my wife. You can take away the life we had But I don’t grant you the gift of my hatred.” We can share our sorrow We can share our pain Everything’s just borrowed and what we give will be returned again So be strong and think about tomorrow He said, “You can take my wife. You can take away the life we had But I don’t grant you the gift of my hatred You can take this joy from me and my boy You can take everything But we won’t grant you the gift of our hatred No, we won’t.” When faced with trying times a few of us will find a strength inside to put the cycle to an end A light at the tunnel’s end

Prodigal Son 04:26
I’ve packed my bags, I’m leaving home Into the wilderness, all alone I leave a home that was built to last I think it’s time I left the nest. I say “I’ve packed my bags, I’m leaving home Into the wilderness, all alone.” “Why leave a home that was built to last?” They say with tears in their eyes, feeling helpless “We made this with you in mind. Why leave it behind? Haven’t we taught you well? Was this all just a waste of our time?” Well, I know this home was built to hold Built with hands other than my own Built with blood and sweat and bone but not my own blood and sweat and bone, oh no you see I am a prodigal son, the one who squanders everything you’ve done I’m self-aware of what I’ve become, yes I am I’m the lesser of two, the lost one, thrown to the wind, work left undone And strangely self-aware of what I’ve become, yes I am I’m your prodigal son. What I’ve learned is not a waste, it gave me grace But that food you made me mother, mmm it gave me the taste And what I’ve learned was not a waste It gave me faith in myself But those boots you gave me father Well they’re helping me walk away, walk away. You see, I am a prodigal son, the one who squanders everything you’ve done I’m self-aware of what I’ve become, yes I am I’m the lesser of two, the lost one, thrown to the wind, work left undone Strangely self-aware of what I’ve become, yes I am I’m your prodigal son “Who will feed you and who will clothe you? Who will love you and who will hold you? No one else can love you as their own” Well, who will need you and who will please you? Who will succeed you and who will be you? I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know I am a prodigal son, I’m a self-proclaimed lost one watch me squander everything you’ve ever done, I am a lesser of two, the lost one thrown to the wind, work left undone I am … I am … I am …

Easy 03:54
No one could ignore you Brandish your words like you flourish a sword you hold it up proud and high, swing it down hard Smile and watch the sparks fly You use me as your reference when you find yourself defenseless and give me your reverence when I’m on your side You are a master of manipulation crafter of selfish stipulations Leaving us all hang out to dry hang out to dry It comes easy for you It comes easy, my love It comes easy for you, my love It comes easy Your waiting for things to be cut down to size You want even the score, an eye for an eye Then when things go your way it is all is fair In love and war there’s no need to share the pity or the blame, the credit or the name Well, either way, the outcome is the same The outcome is the same It comes easy for you It comes easy, my love It comes easy for you, my love It comes easy Well every now and then, in the dark of the night you will think to yourself “It’s time to change my life.” Well honey you know that I will be right by your side if you change But things don’t never change so easy for you It don’t come easy, my love It don’t come easy for you, my love It don’t come easy It don’t come easy It don’t come easy for you, my love

about

"Visceral sensitivity, wrapped in bold song titles like 'Forgiveness' and 'Challenge & Victory', is the key to her trademark sound: introspection with great musicality. Swinging rock piano style and intellectually satisfying arrangements... Eide has a steadfast, empowering vibe along with sweet approachability." - OnAxis Music

Sarah Eide's self-titled album is a stripped down vocal/piano work, allowing the songs to take center stage. Perfect for a cold winter's night, this album is meant to give the listener an intimate feel of her writing and performance.

about

Sarah De Vallière Rochester, New York

A classical background coupled with a love for folk and roots music has led Sarah to writing songs that are daring yet familiar. Her lyrics are all at once raw, smart and intimate, wrapped in expressive melodies and driven by adventurous chord changes. Her songs dare question aloud spirituality, morality, relationships, societal standards, and where the line lies between right and wrong. ... more
